Degrees are a vital way for photographers to keep up with the latest the photographic industry has to offer. Official degrees from PPA give you an edge in business and demonstrate the professionalism you bring to your clients. If you've decided to pursue a degree through PPA, it's time to pick the one you want to work towards.
Speaking Merits are earned by instructing or contributing to the PPA and PPA Affiliate photographic community. Sharing your knowledge and experience is important in moving this industry forward, and PPA wants to reward you for contributing to that effort. (At least 13 required for the Photographic Craftsman degree.)
Artist Exhibition Merits are earned by competing in the more technical Master Artist category of Merit Image Review. These images are evaluated for computer-applied techniques and proficiency. (At least 13 required for the Master Artist degree.)
Service Merits are earned through PPA and PPA Affiliate volunteer service and learning opportunities. (These can be part of the 12 extra merits needed for every degree's 25-merit total.)
At the Award & Degree Ceremony, PPA degree recipients are presented with a colored ribbon and medallion when they receive their degree. There is a different ribbon color for each degree, and multiple degree holders will have multi-colored ribbons in accordance with the degrees they have earned.
Don't stop being active in Merit & Degree program...even if you've earned all your PPA degrees! You never want to stop improving your art or your industry. And PPA recognizes your efforts to go above and beyond via the following bars and awards:
A bar to be worn on the ribbons shall be awarded for each additional twenty-five (25) Merits earned beyond a degree. A silver star shall be placed midway on the right-hand ribbon as the insignia of a Past President. A national Award pin or other PPA earned award may also be worn on the ribbon. No other insignia shall be worn on or attached to the ribbons.

There are many different photography processes: black-and-white, color, infrared and ultraviolet, and digital photography. Each of them marks a different scientific age that comes up with inventions, relevant for art, and a Master in Photography can help you explore each one. Photography also plays its role in capturing historical and social contexts, since the photographers, as objective as they may seem, decide from what angle to take the photo and what element to include into the frame, thus influencing an allegedly objective picture.
Refine your creative vision in Columbia College Chicago's selective Photography Master of Fine Arts program. Greg Foster-Rice is an art historian who teaches the history, theory, and criticism of photography. His research focuses on the intersection of photography, urbanism, and race, although his interests span the full range of photographic media and subjects. He co-curated the exhibition and catalogue The City Lost and Found: Capturing New York, Chicago and Los Angeles, 1960-80, which won the Philip Johnson Award from the Society for Architectural Historians. He is working on an exhibition and book about the photographic collage artist Ralph Arnold at the Museum of Contemporary Photography.
Faculty in the Graduate Photography Program are dedicated to supporting students as they produce rigorously considered and visually accomplished bodies of work conveying new observations regarding perceptions of art and our complex world. Straight photography, mixed and new media, material explorations, and moving image are all encouraged.
Throughout the MFA, students expand their skills in lighting, imaging, printing, the business of photography, marketing, and theory. Many classes include projects such as branding approaches, marketing plans, self-promotion techniques, as well as projects that allow students to hone their artistic voice. For a full list of projects MFA students complete, see our photography projects page.
